Hello everyone,
I thought I should blog about my thoughts on how AMA has improved professional networking for many of our members including myself. Last semester I was your VP of Careers and Placement and it was my job to help you to attain internships and jobs. I was amazed to hear that many of our members got both internships and jobs last semester through AMA connections.
While classroom speaking and recruiting, I had a member come up to me and say that they had gained an internship through Target making over 14 dollars an hour. It was at our professional mixer that this happened. We have had plenty of companies in the past come to our meetings and mixers to give internship and job opportunities inlcuding Dlush, Frito Lay, Pepsi, Sony, 91x, Gallo Wines, Northwestern Mutual and Aflac just to name a few. In fact four AMA members got summer internships at 91x radio over the summer through AMA and they said it was a really great experience.
I, myself, am interning at the San Diego Union Tribune, an internship that I got through AMA. I have learned so much and am gaining great real world experience. I have had the privelege of working on new products and websites that the UT has launched. I am in charge of helping to create brand awareness for our sdBackyard website, which is an innovative new website that is entirely user generated. It is a great place to connect with neighbors as well as find out local news. Content published on the website has a chance to be published in a print edition that is delivered with the newspaper on Fridays.
It just goes to show you that if you are an active member you too can take advantage of all that AMA has to offer. Networking is one aspect of AMA, we also offer great community service and social activities.
I just thought I should spotlight this. Get excited for the rest of the semester's speakers, they are from big name companies and they usually bring great internship opportunities.
We have Davis Elen Advertising, Kodak, Ford Automotive Group, and Sony coming just to name a few.
I encourage you to join, and be an active members, who knows it might lead to a great job or internship opportunity.
I also encourage you to leave comments describing jobs or internships that you got through being an AMA member.
